Attractions Near Stonehenge

Enjoy a trip to Stonehenge with other nearby attractions to explore prehistoric remains, interesting towns and charming villages. A trip to from London to Stonehenge only takes two hours, so covering nearby landmarks is easy. Just north of Bath, the Cotswolds is one of the most beautiful places to visit near Stonehenge. It is home to green rolling hills, wooded lands, stone walls, towns, and charming villages. Home to many celebrities, the Cotswolds have many picturesque villages bursting with culture and heritage. One such village is Stow-on-the-Wold, known for antique shops, art galleries and refreshment joints. The inland beach and Cotswolds Water Park for watersports, like kayaking, swimming, or surfing are also quite popular.

Old Sarum
Old Sarum

Old Sarum is now a deserted and ruined site, reflecting the original settlement of the town of Salisbury. In the past, old Sarum was initially occupied by hunting parties and original farmers of the land. Old Sarum, 16-minutes away from Stonehenge is known for the mind blowing iron-age fort with years-worth of history hidden inside. There is also an iron-age fort here with years’ worth of history, which is jaw-dropping. It is only 16 minutes away from Stonehenge and 2 miles from Salisbury. Walk from Salisbury to reach here and get the opportunity to witness the River Avon Bank, Victoria Park and Hudson’s Field.

Salisbury’s main attraction is Salisbury Cathedral, or the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary, as it was previously known. Built in the 13th century, it preserves the English Magna Carta inside. What makes it one of the unique attractions near Stonehenge is it’s the first cathedral built on an unobstructed site. It is also famous for having the world’s oldest working clock in the entire Europe. Built only in 38 years, it also has the tallest spire, around 404 feet high, in Britain.

Avebury
Avebury

One of the best places to visit near Stonehenge is Avebury, a world heritage village. This beautiful town is famous for the largest stone circle in the world-Avebury Henge and Tongue Circle. It is also known for remains from the Bronze and Neolithic ages and an ancient tomb. Visit Silbury Hill, a man-made hill which is one of the largest in Europe. Avebury Manor, the Church of St. James, and Windmill Hill are other places to visit here.

Netheravon Dovecote
Netheravon Dovecote

Netheravon Dovecote, a Grade II 18th-century dovecote, is a charming but practical building. Located on private land, you are not allowed inside the premises, however you can admire the astounding 700 original chalk boxes. The Flemish bond-style construction of this dovecote is what makes it one of the best attractions near Stonehenge. It also has a pyramid-style, plain, square-hipped tile roof. The building has only one entrance on its opposite side and for ventilation, it has a 20th-century door. When here, visit the church built in the 11th century and the small pub around the dovecote.

Woodhenge
Woodhenge

A Neolithic site, Woodhenge is one of the most popular attractions near Stonehenge. Built-in 2500 BC, it is known for its six standing oval concrete posts with a bank and ditch surrounding the structure. No one knew about the existence of Woodhenge until 1925, when it was discovered through aerial photography. The current structure of Woodhenge is not original but has undergone many restoration stages. Its use is similar to Stonehenge in terms of being a burial site.

Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle

 One of the top places to visit near Stonehenge is Windsor Castle, the royal residence. The largest and oldest occupied castle has over 1000 rooms and has been the home of 40 monarchs till now. Only 68 miles from Stonehenge, explore the ceremonial room with gold chandeliers. Other things to see here are St. George’s Chapel, a 500 old mediaeval church, witness to several royal weddings.
